Education in the UK.

The oldest universities located there still occupy top places in world rankings.

Some History.

At the beginning of the XII century, Cambridge and Oxford Universities were founded, which were the only ones in England until the 19th century. They created a university education system in the UK.

However, in the 19th century, the industrial revolution raises the question of training both managers and administrators, and this in turn leads to the creation of red brick universities that differed significantly from the stonewalls of Cambridge and Oxford universities.

Technical and technological advances set their own conditions and requirements, and after the Second World War, “glass” universities were created, so-called because of their modern appearance. In 1992, in the UK, thirty-three polytechnics acquire university status.

Old universities still attract foreign students, although this trend is gradually changing, and the difference between old and new universities is disappearing (the old ones are still dominated by natural sciences and theoretical disciplines).

Obtaining an academic degree upon completion of training.

Time dictates its own rules. The so-called \\\”weight\\\” of an academic degree is determined by the status and reputation of the university in which it was awarded, although formally, it is a bachelor's degree – it is also a bachelor's degree in Africa. The titles of these same degrees vary greatly from university to university. Therefore, for example, at Oxford, the BSc (bachelor of science) is the highest degree, but there is not this qualification at Cambridge University at all.

Entry Requirements.

Every university in the UK requires an A-levels exam to be admitted to an undergraduate degree. A-levels are a traditional qualification system offered by UK schools and colleges to students aged 16-19. A-levels consists of academic subjects, necessary to enter a university, and students choose them, depending on the university and direction. For example, if a student has chosen engineering direction, then it is worth to take mathematics and physics as main subjects in A-levels.

In addition, foreign students must provide a certificate of English language – IELTS SELT (UKVI). The IELTS requirements for each program are different, so this information needs to be clarified on the institution's website.

Most British Universities will ask students from Uzbekistan and other CIS countries to complete an additional 2 years A-levels or 1-year Foundation program. This is necessary, since the secondary education system in Britain and our country is different, and the number of years is different as well – our students study 11-years at school, when in the UK – 12.

What is the GCSE course?

GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) is issued before the A-levels and Foundation, which is equivalent to our 10th and 11th grades of school. This is a set of exams that are taken in England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and other parts of Britain. Most schools require students to pass five or more exams before moving onto A-levels. Our students can apply for this program after grade 9th. For admission, a student needs to know English at an intermediate level, as well as pass a mathematics test, which will be sent by a college or school.

The Foundation program is a preparatory course for international students, based on the fact that English is not their native language. Particular attention is paid to bringing English to a level that is comfortable in an academic environment. Secondary, but no less important, is the improvement of knowledge in the chosen disciplines – engineering, design, etc., an opportunity is provided to create a portfolio, prepare for passing entrance exams to universities. As a rule, the program starts in September or January and lasts a year or six months (accelerated course). Most often, students choose this program at state universities, since upon successful completion of the course, they almost automatically become students of the first higher education at the same university. However, it is worth knowing that not all universities accept graduates of this program, for example, Oxford and Cambridge. For such universities, it is worth taking the A-levels program.

IB – International Baccalaureate – a training course designed for two years, during which students study six compulsory disciplines. This degree is an alternative to the “A-levels” and is awarded upon completion of courses in selected schools in the UK.
